My name is Carlo Zuccaro. I started purple magpie coaching as an alternative 'recovery' resource. I believe we are increasingly disconnected despite the wealth of technology we have available, and that existing 'treatment' and support options have not adapted well to modern living, and are not always appealing to those seeking recovery from addictive behaviours or equipped to provide broader aftercare.
Rehabs are also increasingly fewer and not readily accessible or affordable for many. We have fewer people entering treatment and record numbers of drug related deaths amidst large scale budget cuts to public services. (source PHE)
Something has to change and i believe asset based community development and recovery coaching are integral to that.
Recovery coaching is a relatively new thing in the U.K, and I believe we can all create a lasting legacy that adds value to the recovery community and society as a whole.
With around 10 years’ experience in the substance misuse sector and in long term recovery myself, i have found that coaching and mentoring, with the experience and accountability that support brings can really enhance an individual's success in making positive choices and achieving long term behavioural change.
I was also born with a congenital disability so have learned how to thrive off adversity and build resilience.
'Recovery Coaches draw their legitimacy not from traditionally acquired educational credentials, but rather, through experiential knowledge and experiential expertise.' (Borkman, 1976)
I work with individuals to identify recovery capital and tap into recovery support services, as well as working with recovery charities and CIC'S to improve their engagement with or create thriving recovery communities.
Why the magpie?
The magpie is a symbolic totem for me and has showed up in my own life many times during difficult periods, reminding me of my personal values and mission.
It is an omen for us to find our voice show up and in every area of our lives.
